Baseball Rules

Teeball:

Baseball Tee Ball (ages 3-4)

Purpose:

To build fundamental skills and knowledge of the game of baseball, (hitting, catching, throwing, fielding, base running)

Measurements:

Bases are 25 feet apart

Batting:

  • Half of each team will bat for each half inning. ie; teams of 10 will have 5 players bat per inning.
  • All players must hit. Player can not bat in consecutive innings.
  • Players cannot sit out more than 1 inning per game.

Play:

  • The team in the field will place every player from their team on the field during play. There will be no outs during innings, however the players are taught and encouraged to field the ball and to make throws at base.
  • If fielding player makes an errant throw at base, or baseman does not catch the ball thrown to him, runners may make a run to the next available base ONLY. (If runner on first base runs to second, and baseman doesn’t catch the ball, the runner may proceed to third base only. Runner may continue to home plate on next hit.)

Score & Umpires:

Coaches will act as umpires and score will not be kept.

Equipment:

Parents are to provide their children with the following equipment:

  • Helmet
  • Glove
  • Bat (if not sharing with a teammate)
  • Coaches are responsible to bring the equipment provided by the league. Equipment is for team practices and gameday use. Gameday locations should have their own equipment but coaches should also bring their equipment just in case gameday equipment is misplaced.
  • League equipment provided consists of:
  • 1 set of throw down bases
  • 3 balls
  • 1 bat
  • 1 tee

 

Intro to Coach Pitch:

*** Players can get out on bases or caught hits; but does not end the inning. All kids will get a chance to hit

 

Purpose:

During this transition from tee ball to coach pitch, players will continue to build fundamental skills learned from tee ball while introducing hitting a pitch and better fielding techniques.

Measurements:

Bases are 35 feet apart

Batting:

  • Half of each team will bat for each half inning. ie; teams of 10 will have 5 players bat per inning.
  • Coaches will pitch to their own teams.
  • Players will receive 5 pitches each, (3 over hand, 2 under hand)
  • If player does not hit a pitch, coaches will provide a tee for players to hit.
  • All players must hit. Player can not bat in consecutive innings.
  • Players cannot sit out more than 1 inning per game.

Play:

  • The team in the field will place every player from their team on the field during play. There will be no outs during innings, however the players are taught and encouraged to field the ball and make throws at base.

  • Softball is Slow Pitch

 

Purpose:

During this transition from tee ball to coach pitch, players will continue to build fundamental skills learned from tee ball while introducing hitting a pitch and better fielding techniques.

  • Baseball:
  • Bases are 45 feet apart
  • Pitching distance is coaches discretion per player
  • Softball:
  • Bases are 35 feet apart
  • Pitching distance is coaches discretion per player

Batting:

  • Half of each team will bat for each half inning. ie; teams of 10 will have 5 players bat per inning unless they receive 3 outs.
  • Coaches will pitch to their own team.
  • Player will receive 5 pitches each (all over hand)
  • If player fails to hit the ball, they are considered “out” and goes to the dugout. No tee is provided.
  • All players must hit. Player cannot bat in consecutive innings.
  • Players cannot sit out more than 1 inning per game.

Play:

  • Coaches will place 9 players on the field including a “pitcher” and ”catcher”.
  • “pitcher” and “catcher” will stand next to parent/ coach until ball is pitched/ hit. Once the ball is in play pitcher and catcher can resume position to field ball.
  • If fielding player makes an errant throw at base, or baseman does not catch the ball thrown to him, runners may make a run to the next available base ONLY. (If runner on first base runs to second, and baseman doesn’t catch the ball, the runner may proceed to third base only. Runner may continue to home plate on next hit.)

Kid Pitch (baseball and softball):

  • Softball KP is Fast Pitch

 

Purpose:

  • Players will now be learning how to play baseball with minor modifications to rules and calls. Positions will include the pitcher and catcher.

Measurements:

  • Baseball:
  • Bases are 55 feet apart
  • Pitching distance is 45 ft from home plate
  • Softball:
  • Bases are 45 feet apart
  • Pitching distance is 35 ft from home plate

Umpires:

  • One umpire will be provided by the league.
  • Parents and coaches are asked to help call outs at bases

Play; Batting, Strikes, and Outs:

  • Coaches will place 9 players on the field including a “pitcher” and "catcher”
  • Games are 80 minutes in length. At 5 min left in game the team at bat will be the last team at bat (even if team at bat is starting a new inning)
  • If the game time runs out without both teams having a chance to bat in the final inning, the score will revert to the previous inning's score.
  • Batters will begin with a 0 strike/ 0 ball count. On the third strike the batter will be called out.
  • Bunting is allowed.
  • Foul balls will be counted as normal (All foul balls are strikes, a player cannot strike out on a foul ball)
  • Innings will end when a team has received either 3 outs or has scored 5 runs.
  • Players can only bat once per inning
  • Pitchers will have 50 seconds to throw a pitch

Strike Counts:

Batters will be given a strike for any of the following:

  • Batter swinging and missing a pitch
  • Pitch inside the strike zone with no swing
  • Foul balls will count as strikes

Score:

  • Umpires and coaches will keep score.

Equipment:

  • Parents are to provide their children with the following equipment:
  • Helmet
  • Glove
  • Bat (if not sharing with a teammate)
